Where Japan keeps its creation myth employed
Every culture has a story about the day the light went out. Japan's happened here: Amaterasu, the sun goddess, wronged by her storm-god brother, sealed herself in a cave and took the daylight with her. The eight million gods gathered at a riverbank (you can walk to it; it has a bus stop) and staged the world's first variety show until curiosity cracked the cave door and light returned. Kagura, the dance they used, never stopped being performed here: the shrine stages a short version for visitors every night of the year, and each winter the surrounding hamlets dance the full ritual through to morning.
The gorge below the town is the other half of the visit: basalt columns like organ pipes, a river the color of bottle glass, and the Manai waterfall dropping seventeen meters directly onto the rowing boats of the insufficiently attentive.
